Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari is one of my fav movies ever! I first watched it in the 1990s, while I was attending university. I will never forget that screening: it was evening and a pianist accompanied the silent screening with live music. Awww, so romantic!
Some original sketches of the amazing set designs are displayed at the Deutsche Kinemathek Museum für Film und Fernsehen in Berlin (it’s set in Potsdamer Platz). The same museum displays scene costumes and personal objects (including make-up items and jewellery) previously owned by Marlene Dietrich 🙂
I didn’t know about this museum, it sounds amazing and I will go at all costs when I go to Berlin (hopefully soon, I’ve always wanted to go but never yet managed to). Das Kabinett with live music must have been incredible, I watched part of it during a lecture and immediately borrowed the DVD from the uni library afterwards. Sadly I wasn’t in London when they screened it at the British Film Institute (no live music, but still..!).
I visited it during my honeymoon in Berlin in 2003 and fell in love with it. The location – Potsdamer Platz – is breathtaking and so is the museum. The permanent exhibition includes material from Metropolis by Fritz Lang, and sections devoted to Romy Schneider (even if she was born in Austria) and Hanna Schygulla.
