From the Valley to the Upper East Side: Lily Van der Woodsen’s Style Cross-Over (5.20 – Salon of the Dead)

Awww, there’s trouble in the Upper East Side. The opening scene of Salon of the Dead [1],  the 20th episode of Gossip Girl‘s 5th season, is just sadly sublime: Lily is sitting in her living room, alone, and sighs in front of a pancake; in Brooklyn, things are even more romantic, with Rufus who’s playing the guitar, clearly longing for his wife. The story wasn’t complicated enough, according to Schwartz and Savage, so they decided to part the only long-time couple of the show.

Lily may be sad but she still manages to look more chic and refined than ever, even while she’s having breakfast. Her tan silk dress is perfectly accessorized with gold statement jewellery.

Besides a gold disc necklace, hoop earrings and a diamond ring, she’s also wearing a statement oval ring: it’s a Bounkit piece, set with cabochon ruby and faceted white topaz.

There can be problems in the couple, but Lily and Rufus just cannot stay apart from each other. For this reason, Lily invents a silly excuse (she has made too much salad, she “happened to be in the neighbourhood” and decided to stop by) in order to meet her husband. I love them as a couple but it’s not clear if their relation is destined to last or not. I believe they’re meant to be together, but both behave in a questionable way, so both could have good reasons to decide to break up. In this scene, Lily is wearing a lovely brown belted coat and a chain bag – a Miss Dior bag in crocodile. This is the third time she carries Dior bags – a Miss Dior quilted bag in Father and the Bride (5×12) and a Miss Dior clutch in Con-Heir (5×18).

Her awesome Saya earrings are made of 18K gold-plated metal and are embellished with cubic zirconia stones and green quartz stones. These are creations by Meghna Designs, a great exotic take on the traditional hoop earrings.

For all the fans of Lily’s hairstyles, here’s a close-up on her “knot” updo, a style I never get tired of.

When the scene closes, it seems they have made peace, as shown by Rufus’ romantic kiss on Lily’s hand. Lily has explained that her husband is “the only comfort” she needs and she even says she wants to find a new apartment to live in, a place that fits them both. She wants him back because she loves him, but this is Gossip Girl, so things are far from being settled.

After visiting Rufus’ loft, she gets back to her apartment, where she tells Vanja her husband is coming back home. In the screencap above, we can see she’s wearing brown pumps with gold metallic heels.

In that moment, she receives a phone call from the Soho Grand, where they need to verify his credit card information. It comes out he’s paying for the stay of Ivy at the hotel. The dress she wears is lovely: it’s a Fendi cap-sleeve v-neck dress with contrast belt, made of lightweight wool. Thanks for ShenanK for the id!

Later, Rufus explained to a furious Lily that he feels sorry for Ivy, who is alone and has lost everything: that’s why he’s paying a hotel for her. The problem is a more complicated than this: she accuses him of having helped Ivy with her money. The point is that she’s always felt she’s in control of the relation because she’s got the money, and now Rufus can finally see the truth. Many other things happen in this episode, and one of the most relevant is that we finally find out that Diana Payne is Chuck’s biological mother. I think this has been pretty clear since the last episodes, but now we know the truth about this, too.

What do you think will happen between Lily and Rufus? Will they make peace once and for all? Or will Rufus become an ally for Ivy? Moreover, if someone can help me to identify other items of Lily’s outfit, please share your thoughts in the comments!

[1] The title is a reference to a comedy/horror cult movie, Shaun of the Dead (2004) by Edgar Wright.
