Christina Aguilera’s Style: Performing “At Last” at Etta James’ Funeral, January 28, 2012

Last week many sad things happened in the world: one of these was the death of Etta James, one of the greatest American singers of all times. Christina Aguilera has always expressed her respect and admiration for Miss Peaches: she has often sung the classic At Last during her concerts, sang with James herself and included Something’s Got a Hold on Me (another classic song by James) in the soundtrack of Burlesque.

The funerals took place yesterday in Los Angeles and Christina was asked to perform At Last once again, as the last homage to the great artist. I’m so glad James’ family chose Christina to pay this tribute, because I think it’s a sort of public acknowledgement of Christina as part of James’ legacy. Many artists have been clearly influenced by Etta James – just think of Amy Winehouse, Adele, Paloma Faith, Diana Ross and Janis Joplin, not to mention Beyoncé – but Christina was the one who had the honour to sing such a famous song at such an emotional event.

For the occasion, she was obviously dressed in black and wore a simple skirt suit. I think something happened to her skirt before the performance, because the lower hem looks crinkled, which is quite disappointing. Apart from the skirt, I loved her outfit, very feminine. She’s Christina Aguilera, after all, and had to add a sexy touch, so she wore no top under the vest; this can be considered a questionable choice, but one must give her credit for being always true to herself.

Whenever she wears a skirt suit, you can be 99% sure that she’s wearing a Dolce & Gabbana creation. This time made no exception: she wore a gorgeous blazer in wool twill fabric with satin details and a matching vest with four buttons. I don’t know if the skirt is by Dolce & Gabbana as well: it could be this one, but hers looks different from the jacket, with a slightly different shade of black.

She also wore her lucky shoes, her trusty Bianca patent platform pumps by Christian Louboutin, which she has worn many times.

The jewellery department included pieces we’ve already seen on her: a Loree Rodking long diamond rosary necklace with cross pendant, Garrard Wings diamond hoop earrings, a diamond ring and Stephen Webster Crystal Haze ring with diamonds and a garnet quartz. She sported her trademark ruby lips, dark red nails and a lovely curly hairstyle. You know I think she really needs to do something with her hair, but this new style really suits her.

Before the performance, Christina explained the important role that Etta James had in her life and in her career. She got really emotional while explaining the reason why she loves At Last: the verse “I found a dream that I could speak to” has meant so much to her, so I’m sure it was not easy to sing such a meaningful song at such an event. In any case, I think she really displayed her feelings in the performance and her singing abilities. People on gossip sites are busy with criticizing her, accusing her of oversinging and having menstrual blood running down her leg (it’s clear it’s spray tan; in any case so what?) but please, don’t they think it’s time to stop? Haters are going to hate her, but this doesn’t change the fact that she’s an incredible singer. That’s it.

What do you think of her outfit? Event-proper or should she have covered herself up?

Source and source.

      1. Really? It sounded strage to me as well! The spray tan makes much more sense. In any case, poor xtina! Another excuse to go hard on her.

      2. Right! Now I’ve realized how things go when it comes to her: she could have barked at Etta James’ funeral and nobody would have taken notice of that, because all the press (and most of blogs) only wants to bring her down all the time. She’s fat, she’s had her menstruations, she’s not wearing her bra and so on. Nobody seems to care about her voice or her singing abilities, and this is really sad.

  1. She should have covered up. It’s a taste issue and Christina has a history. She has a beautiful voice. She needs to hire a stylist who can talk her out of faux pas like no shirt with a too tight suit, no hose at a funeral and push clothes that flatter her shape as well as better shade of blonde for her. I don’t think I like anything she is wearing– maybe her lipstick is ok. She is so talented it is a shame her costume choices are distracting press and blogs. She has matured and it is time to still be true to herself/style but do it with class. If everyone only heard her on audio, there would be no detractors/haters.

    1. A better shade of blonde and a different hairstyle is the first thing she should do!

I love Simone Harouche’s style, but she seems to have no luck with Christina. She works with Nicole Richie, Miley Cyrus (who has incredibly improved thanks to her) and Demi Lovato (who’s stunning), but Christina is still striving to find her voice when it comes to style. Simone worked with her during the Back to Basics period, but now things are different and she should really take some drastic style choices.

“Do it with class”: this is soooo true. A stylist should help her in this.
