From the Valley to the Upper East Side: Lily Van der Woodsen’s Style Cross-Over (3.14 – The Lady Vanished + Hermès Moments in Real Life)

The Lady Vanished [1], the 14th episode of Gossip Girl‘s third season, is interesting because some plots reach their turning point (Chuck realizes Elizabeth – a lovely Laura Herring – is his mother and that she willingly left him and Bart after his birth; Dan and Vanessa decide to give their love story a try), while others are ready to reach their peak (Serena’s pathetic phone call to her father; Jenny rebels to her father once again and runs away with Damien; Lily and Rufus are on the rocks). Jenny’s storyline is the most interesting, in my opinion, because it presents the (negative) development of a character, something similar to what happened to Chuck in the second season. All the other characters look quite static, and Jenny is the only one who actually fights for something.

As for Lily, she appears in some scenes, but sporting the same outfit. We get glimpses of her life without Rufus (she wakes up late, she takes pills and drinks wine, all alone), but I’m sure the two will end up together again. The outfit she has in this episode is very much in her style.

When she finds out that Damien has spent the night in Jenny’s bedroom, she gets angry and decides to call Rufus. She is wearing a silver-trimmed grey sweater and cardigan and a black pencil skirt. I love her new hairstyle, she looks much younger with loose hair than with her trademark updo. Her accessories are diamond stud earrings and a gold necklace with round pendant.

In the last scene, Vanja brings a Rufus’ scarf that was found in his lover’s apartment to Lily. She realizes that now they’re even, because he has betrayed her. We still don’t know exactly what happened between Lily and her former husband (she said they just kissed), nor the reason why she went to him. I guess the next episodes will tell all the truth. In this scene, we can see the crystal (or diamond?) ring she’s sporting on her finger.

And here we can see her full figure. She is wearing Christian Louboutin patent pumps, but the screencap is so unclear I couldn’t identify the style of the shoes.

I hope Lily will have more space in the next episodes (Stephanie Savage told me so via Twitter). As for Kelly Rutherford, she has been very busy lately, because she attended lots of social events. As you may have noticed, her character is opting for accessories which are not by Hermès (bummer!), but the actress is always loyal to her favourite brand. Is it coincidental that she attended these events with Matthew Settle? Now they’re both single, wouldn’t it be great if they were a couple out of the set too?

On February 21st, Kelly attended the Hungry in America project by the Feed Foundation, held at Colicchio & Sons restaurant in New York. What I like about her is that she has got a personal style, but she’s always ready to experiment with fashion. Am I the only one who thinks this outfit is reminiscent of Diane Keaton’s unique style in Annie Hall? She wore a grey pant suit (the pants are wide-cut and high-rise), a white tee, a black scarf and Christian Louboutin Ron Ron grey suede pumps. I don’t know if she actually was without make-up, but the bare-faced effect is praise-worthy.

There was a time, in the early 2000s, when Chloe collections (at the time designed by Phoebe Philo, who is now in charge at Celine) were hugely popular among celebrities, not to mention the accessories of the same brand. Apart from the iconic Paddington bag, another coveted style was the Silverado satchel. I’ve never thought Kelly could be a Chloe girl, but the Silverado is the perfect match for her outfit.

On March 1st, Kelly got all glammed up for attending an important event, the Winter Ball at the School of American Ballet, at the Lincoln Center in New York. The event sounds wonderful (I love ballet!), somewhere the protagonists of Gossip Girl could actually go to. She ditched her casual look and opted for an important outfit, wearing a stunning Carolina Herrera coral red column dress with beaded embellishments and a twisted knot on one shoulder. She also added diamond drop earrings and a diamond coral-shaped necklace with cabochon sapphires. Her make-up and hairstyle were flawless.

It’s not a mistery that Kelly loves jewelry, so on March 3rd she attended a cocktail party at Jacob & Co, one of the most renowned jewellers in New York. She sported a casual outfit, wearing skinny jeans and a cashmere dove grey cable knit sweater; her accessories were Christian Louboutin pumps and her trusty Hermès Birkin bag. She also wore earrings and a necklace by Jacob & Co.

On March 4th, she walked the red carpet at the Alice Tully Hall in New York for the screening of the Discovery Channel’s Life premiere. She wore a black velvet blazer and skinny pants with a black sweater. Her accessories were all black – Christian Louboutin Simple patent pumps and her Hermès black 32cm Kelly Sellier bag with gold hardware – but the jewelry – a silver and turquoise Navajo necklace (spotted on her last summer) and cuff bracelet – enlightened the outfit. She went nearly make-up-less this time, and I really admire her for this not-so-easy choice.

On March 9th, she attended the 19th annual Bunny Hop, hosted by the Associates Committee of The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The event took place at FAO Schwarz, the biggest and most famous toy store in New York. For the occasion she wore a nice flutter-sleeved dress in grey silk, with a side bow on the shoulder and a draped belt at the waist; she added a pair of Christian Louboutin black pumps. Helena was by her side, wearing cute silver mary-janes.

The following day, Kelly was among the guests at the Same Sky, FEED Foundation & Hands Up Not Handouts charity event at Ana Tzarev gallery. Kelly is a supporter of FEED Foundation and she attends all the charity initiatives for raising funds for World Food Programme feeding operations and awareness of child hunger. She wore a nice chambray shirt dress with a purple scarf, Christian Louboutin Simple pumps in black patent leather and Hermès Kelly Sellier bag. She added African beaded bracelets and round earrings. I really like this outfit, because it nicely combines casual (the shirt dress, the scarf) and luxury (her stunning Kelly bag).

On March 14th, Kelly and Helena attended a Disney event at the New York Palace hotel [2]. Princess Tiana, the protagonist of The Princess and the Frog, was officially inducted into the Disney Princess Royal Court. I’m sure Helena and all the other girls there had a lot of fun (I just imagine my daughter there, she would have gone crazy!). Kelly wore a casual outfit – skinny jeans, plaid shirt, a cashmere dove grey cable knit sweater and taupe flats. She also gave us a Hermès moment, wearing her Evelyne bag in Etoupe. She hasn’t been wearing it for a long time, but now I’m glad she’s taken it out of her closet: it is so stylish and practical, love it!

On March 18th, Kelly and Helena attended the Pampers Dry Max launch party. Helena was adorable with her gold mary-janes; Kelly wore white cropped jeans, a white t-shirt, a purple/pink cardi and a lavender scarf. She added Lanvin powder pink patent flats. As for her accessories, she gave us a great Hermès moment, wearing her Kelly bag in Parchemin and her Collier de Chien bracelet.

The same day, after a quick change, she attended the Alice+Olivia launch party at Saks Fifth Avenue. She wore the same t-shirt and white cropped jeans, adding an Alice+Olivia wrapped sweater. The accessories were the same: her Hermès Kelly bag in Parchemin and white enamel and gold cocktail ring.

From this pic her necklace is visible – one of her favourite pieces, Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra Vintage pendant in gold and mother-of-pearl. When it comes to her bracelet, words fail me: I am a worshipper of Hermès Collier de Chien cuff (though I own none), so I cannot but stare in awe her beautiful CdC in white leather and palladium.

Did you enjoy Gossip Girl‘s latest episode? What about Kelly’s outfits out of the set? Which is your favourite?

[1] The title comes from The Lady Vanishes (1938), a thriller starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

    1. It’s true she poses with her legs crossed most of the time! Who knows? Maybe she feels confident when she poses like this.
