If you are a tv series addict like me, yesterday you surely watched the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. I unfortunately wasn’t able to watch the ceremony (I was sleeping!), but tonight I woke up, cuddled up under the blankets with my iPhone not to disturb my husband and checked the red carpet pictures on Just Jared. I usually don’t cover the Emmy Awards, but I was so surprised to see so many beautiful outfits that I’ve changed my mind. Here is the list of my 9 best-dressed celebrities.
Ladies in Red/Pink
I love Sarah Paulson and if you are a regular reader of this blog, you know why. She’s a talented actress and a beautiful woman who has a refined style. She’s not a red carpet regular but she always sports interesting outfits. Yesterday she wore a stunning red column dress by Carolina Herrera from the Fall 2013 collection. The bright red shade beautifully complements Sarah’s complexion; the plunging neckline, the draped waistline and the bow accenting the waist turn the dress into a showstopper. Sarah completed it with red satin platform sandals, a side-swept wavy hairstyle and a beautiful Fred Leighton gold and diamond leaf cuff bracelet. This is definitely my favourite outfit of the evening.
Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery sported a dramatic two-tone Prada dress. The halter bodice is made of red duchesse satin, while the asymmetrical skirt is made of burgundy silk radzmire. A double ribbon bow accents the naked waist, while Fred Leighton diamond earrings, a jewelled red satin clutch and diamanté strappy sandals (all by Prada) complete the outfit. I like Michelle’s simple make-up and side-parted sleek hairstyle.
Laura Dern was pretty in pink: she wore a romantic Naeem Khan peach pink dress from the Spring 2014 collection. The naked back contrasts with the long skirt and is balanced by the short sleeves. The beaded embellishment in a floral pattern all over the dress is simply sublime. The actress completed her look with Jimmy Choo shoes, Lorraine Schwartz earrings and a ring by Dionea Orcini. The only detail I don’t like much is her messy updo; I would have preferred something more minimal.
Ladies in White/Milky Shades
The winner of this category is Kerry Washington, in my opinion. The actress stunned the audience wearing a princess-like dress by Marchesa from the Spring 2014 collection: the silk floral appliqués, the gold beaded embroideries on tulle and the satin ribbons accenting the bodice and neckline are the main features of this romantic number. Kerry steered away from the bridal-dress effect by choosing lovely accessories – an Edie Parker mother-of-pearl Jean clutch, Christian Louboutin shoes, Fred Leighton diamond earrings, a pink diamond ring and a gold watch. She also sported a refined make-up, wavy hair and a beautiful pale pink manicure.
Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen opted for a milky shade of pink: she wore a show-stopper by Zac Posen, featuring the designer’s trademark mermaid line, accurately unfinished ruffle hems and draped bodice. She completed the outfit with a Marchesa Iris clutch in Paisley lame and crystals, Christian Louboutin shoes and Jacob and Co. diamond jewellery. Her hair was styled in a chic updo, which didn’t divert the attention from the dress.
Lily Rabe, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways… Spooky attitude on the red carpet and angelic appearance: that’s what makes the American Horror Story actress so charming and standing out of the celebrity crowd. She wore an asymmetrical dress by Vionnet, made of white and pale lilac panels, the bodice gathered and the hips draped; she matched it with white Christian Louboutin point-toe pumps and diamond bracelets, arrowhead earrings and rings by Lorraine Schwartz. Her blonde hair was styled in soft ways and she emphasized the vampy bombshell vibe with dark red nails and lips: the final result was flawless.
Claire Danes was among the winners of the ceremony: she won the award as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Homeland. She looked elegant and ethereal in an Armani Privé dress from the Fall 2013 collection: the bodice is made of sequined sheer tulle and leaves the back naked, while the skirt is made of tulle and lace. Claire is the queen of minimalism, so no wonder she opted for simple accessories – custom-made Christian Louboutin shoes and Neil Lane diamond jewellery. Her blonde hair was styled in an original faux short bob, while her ruby lips added a pop of colour.
Elisabeth Moss walked the red carpet wearing a black and white outfit and she looked really beautiful. She chose an Andrew Gn dress from the Resort 2014 collection with a sequined strapless bodice and a brocade-like patterned long skirt. The accessories she picked were perfect – Casadei shoes, Neil Lane jewelry and a Rauwolf octagon clutch. Her orange red nails matched her lips, while her blonde hair was styled with a side parting.
The OutsiderI love red carpet outsiders, those who dare to wear potentially ugly outfits, those who are usually left out of best-dressed lists and pointed at as examples of how NOT to wear at an important event. This time the palm goes to Lena Dunham, who wore a teal rose-printed gazar dress by Prada, completing it with Prada shoes (and red satin clutch) and a Neil Lane gold ring. Though not a fan of her shorter hairstyle, I love her colourful eye make-up and pale pink nails. I’ve often criticized her but I can’t see the point in this case: she looked lovely in this dress, even if she’s not a 0 size. I mean, this is something I would wear myself without feeling ridiculous, since I share the same body structure (large hips and thighs, pot-belly and barely-there cleavage) as Lena’s.
